Hardwood floors that work for you
One of the most important decisions to make right away when choosing a hardwood floor is picking the right species for your home. Woods are scored with a Janka rating which rates woods for their level of hardness, from very soft to very hard. If you have a busy, active household, you’ll need a very hard species to stand up to the everyday wear it’s going to undergo. Softer woods would break down quickly, necessitating refinishing much sooner than it should. Over time, the overall lifespan of the flooring will also suffer without the appropriate species.
You should know right away that hardwood flooring can never be installed below grade in areas such as basements. The humidity levels and temperatures changes in this setting make it impossible for these floors to function as they should. These floors also have to be acclimated to the environment into which they are going. This is to assure that the subfloor and the flooring itself are at the same humidity levels and one doesn’t overpower the other, causing warping, buckling, or splitting.

Hardwood flooring is a unique, natural product that can add a sense of rustic elegance to any room. Modern hardwoods are low maintenance – gone are the days of buffing and waxing -and are also surprisingly easy to repair. If your hardwood floors lose their original appeal their life can be rejuvenated by being refinished.
